In order — each step assumes you’ve done the one before it.

  1. Pick your lane before you apply broadly

    An entry-level candidate wading into hardware/firmware roles at Tesla or Samsung is competing in a different pool than one applying to Indeed or a Series A startup. Decide which of the four company types above fits your background and risk tolerance, and weight your applications toward it — scattershot applying across all four wastes your limited interview prep time.

  2. Get inside the local network

    Austin runs heavily on warm introductions relative to its size. Mid-size and startup interviews lean more practical: a take-home, a pairing session, or a conversation about a real production incident. Prepping only LeetCode for a startup interview, or only system-design storytelling for a Big Tech loop, is a common mismatch.

  5. Negotiate the full package, not the headline number

    Given how wide the bonus-and-equity spread is at senior levels and above, always ask for the complete offer breakdown in writing before you counter, and confirm whether the base number you were quoted is pre- or post-signing bonus.

Common questions

Do I need a CS degree to break in?

No, but the path narrows without one — you’ll lean more heavily on demonstrable project work and referrals, especially for Big Tech campus roles that filter on degree at the resume-screen stage. Hardware and infrastructure roles are typically stricter about formal engineering backgrounds than startup or mid-size roles are.

Is Austin’s tech market still growing, or has it cooled?

Both things are true at once. Hiring at pure software startups has been choppier than in 2021–2022, but the hardware, semiconductor, and data-center buildout around Tesla, Samsung, and the broader AI-infrastructure expansion has kept overall engineering demand strong — it’s just shifted toward companies that also need systems, firmware, and infrastructure engineers, not only web/app developers.

Remote or hybrid — what’s realistic?

Does Texas having no state income tax actually matter?
